S042: Verbal Signs That Show We Are Not Listening
In the last episode, episode 41, I talked about the problems I have with listening. I held nothing back in that episode in my attempt to help you seek the truth for your self. This episode, on the other hand, discusses the verbal signs that show we are not listening or being listened to. It also offers ways we could improve our listening abilities.
In this episode, you will learn
- 5 top verbal signs that show we are not listening,
- ways to improve our listening abilities, and
- about what to do when we see these signs in others.
Your Story reminds me of mine
One common verbal sign that shows a person is not listening is when (s)he jumps in to tell his/her story(that your story reminds him/her of) even before you share your experience. This is common to many of us, especially when we think we know alot.
This rarely helps. And more often that not, alienates the speaker from us. Another problem with this is that it does not afford us the time to listen to what the other person really has to say. We also do not gain new insight when we are always limited by our own experience.
One way out is to first understand that our paradigm or experience is not the only way to see life. We must come to terms with the fact that there are often more than one way to see the same thing.
This episode discusses four other common verbal signs that show we are not listening. Not only do I explain how they creep into our conversations, I discussed a number of approaches I have found effective in dealing with them.
Listen to get the whole idea.
